THE MONTHLY ECHO #June

Hi All!

Welcome to this month’s echo - a roundup of what’s been on my radar, what I’ve been pondering, and the gems I’ve stumbled across lately. Enjoy!

“Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.”

TECH & DESIGN

Claude App Build → ADDICTED → DIY BTS - In a week or two, with the help of Claude, we built a podcast app for the ADDICTED series. Directors apply and simply answer the podcast on their own phone, desktop - no scheduling around busy, traveling creatives. Everything gets edited and mixed afterward, and the podcast is done. Lesson: play with the AI tools, give an idea a few hours or days, even a small tool is worth building.

Code & Media as leverage - There are three ways to multiply your output: labor and capital both need someone else's yes. The new one doesn't - code and media copy themselves for free. Write software or publish an essay once, and it works for you forever, at zero marginal cost, without permission. Wrong question: "how many hours can I sell?" Right question: "what can I build once that serves a million times?"

ON THE WATCHLIST

Japanese Commercials 2023 - Tommy Lee Jones doing his thing in Japan. Funny, weird, and cool in equal parts.

McEnroe/Borg: Fire & Ice is a 2011 HBO Sports documentary that chronicles the legendary tennis rivalry between the volatile American John McEnroe and the stoic Swede Björn Borg. The 65-minute film covers their contrasting personalities, iconic 1980 Wimbledon final, and their post-tennis careers.

The Agency, Season 2 - Paramount+ trailer.

MORE WISDOM

"Build the thing that keeps working after you've stopped."
via Naval Archive

"Treasure your attention. What you pay attention to shapes what you care about and what you care about shapes what you become."
via Jonathan Haidt

"Sometimes you can improve by cutting your options off."
via James Clear

"One of the more effective ways to force yourself to have better ideas is to create an artificial constraint. For many years, I wrote two articles per week and it would often take me over 20 hours to complete each article. Then I said, "If I only had 2 to 4 hours per week to write my newsletter, what would I do?" That artificial constraint led to the creation of the 3-2-1 newsletter, which has become an incredibly popular format. Sometimes you can improve by cutting your options off."
